The identification of animals is an indispensable tool for the sanitary and zootechnical management of livestock. It has become the starting point and a prerequisite for any action, intervention, or information on animals, and the major instrument for monitoring their movements and the traceability of their products. The importance of animal identification is at several levels. It is:

– a prerequisite for any animal husbandry and animal health measures;
– A tool for managing livestock and monitoring the traceability of animals and their products;
– a means of surveillance and control of animal diseases (particularly contagious);
– A means to ensure the control of zootechnical actions and interventions (knowledge of family structure, performance, evaluation of production, information on livestock, …);
– A tool for transparency in livestock transactions (quality, health status).
